Indian Summer

The weather was just so beautiful today, we couldn't resist the call of the outdoors.
So after loading up our book bags at the library and grabbing our storytime turkeys,
we headed over to feed the ducks.

Fifty-five degrees and full sunshine had the ducks, geese, swans, and seagulls out in force.
They were hungry for our breadcrumbs and happy for some attention after the neglect of much colder preceding days.

We found the playground uncrowded, and yet there were still friends to be made:
for making sandcastles, pushing on swings, and dizzying on the merry go round.

In between my own turns at swing-pushing and cooing at the baby, I basked in the colors of Fall.
With gratitude in my heart for all of this and more, it was the perfect opening to a long Thanksgiving holiday.

Halloweeny

Halloweeny, the snowman, was a jolly happy soul.
With a punkin head, and a sweet tooth, too
and a beany hat he stole

Halloweeny, the jack-o-snow, was a fairy tale they say
made of pumpkin pie & season's first snow
but the children know how he came to life that day

there must have been some magic in that jack-o-lantern we'd made
for when we placed it on his head, he smiled and he played

Oh, Halloweeny the snow-lantern had a glimmer in his eye
we built him strong, to last all day long
so we wouldn't have to say goodbye.

Halloweeny the snow jack was as fun as he could be
while we built away, we would laugh and play
and the very next day he was the only snow that you could see.
